Castlevania: Nocturne is an American animated horror-action series released by Netflix. Serving as a spin-off to the original Castlevania animated adaptation, it is inspired by Konami’s video game franchise and follows Richter Belmont and Maria Renard during the turmoil of the French Revolution. The series takes creative influence from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Its first season, consisting of eight episodes ranging from 24 to 31 minutes, premiered globally on September 28, 2023, while the second season debuted on January 16, 2025. Audience reception to the first season was divided. On Rotten Tomatoes, viewers gave it a 48% audience score based on more than 1,000 ratings. Metacritic similarly categorized user feedback as “mixed or average,” assigning a weighted score of 4.7 from 265 ratings. While many viewers appreciated the animation quality, some felt the series did not reach the standards set by its predecessor. Common criticisms included the narrative focus on supporting characters over the protagonists, uneven storytelling, heavy use of profanity, and the handling of political themes. The second season received a considerably warmer response from audiences. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 89% audience approval rating from over 500 user reviews. Metacritic again listed user reception as “mixed or average,” though the weighted score increased to 5.5 based on 24 ratings. Viewers and critics praised the season for its stronger character development, more refined action choreography, and reduced reliance on coarse language. Black Nerd Problems also highlighted the series’ treatment of Yoruba spiritual traditions through Annette’s storyline, as well as Olrox’s motivations, which are connected to the historical decline of the Aztec civilization.
