Speculative and SFF fiction editor: Developmental and line edits
Informazioni su questo servizio
Hi, I'm Michael, a published speculative fiction author, editor and teacher with:
- BA in English Literature
- MA in Creative Writing (Genre Fiction)
- MA in Politics and doctoral work in linguistics.
I specialise in:
- Literary-leaning speculative fiction
- Science fiction (from cosy to hard SF)
- Fantasy
- Weird /experimental/horror/ genre-blending work
What I do in this gig
- I combine developmental editing (big-picture story work) with line editing (sentence-level clarity and style). Depending on your package, I will:
- Read your work as a real reader first, noting where Im hooked or drifting
- Strengthen character arcs, stakes, and emotional beats
- Highlight pacing issues, plot holes, and world-building gaps
- Refine sentences for flow, tone, and readability while preserving your voice
- Point out repeated words, clunky phrasing, and unclear images
- Provide an editorial letter with concrete, prioritised next steps
How I work
- I edit in Track Changes (Word).
- I use clear, kind comments. It's never 'just fix this', always why and how.
- I wont ghost-rewrite your book; I'll help you write the best version of it.

FAQ
Which genres do you specialise in?
I focus on speculative fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and literary-leaning genre fiction. I’m happy with cosy, character-driven stories, quiet SF, experimental/weird work, and darker speculative fiction.
What qualifies you to edit my book?
I’m a published speculative fiction author, editor and teacher. I hold a BA in English Literature, an MA in Creative Writing (Genre Fiction), and I’m a doctoral candidate in sociolinguistics and creative writing. I combine that background with hands-on experience writing and editing SFF.
Will you change my voice or rewrite my book?
No. My job is to strengthen what’s already on the page. I’ll suggest cuts, rephrasings, and additions, but I will always respect your voice and creative choices. You remain the author.
What exactly is a “revision round”?
A revision round covers clarifications, short questions, and a focused second look at sections you’ve revised based on my feedback. Major new writing or big structural changes may require a new order or a custom offer.
Do you offer live calls to discuss the edit?
Yes. Premium packages for longer projects include a 60-minute video consultation. We’ll go through the editorial letter, look at specific examples from your manuscript, and create a clear revision plan.
Do you work with AI-assisted writing?
I’m happy to edit work that has used AI at some stage, as long as you are the copyright holder and the text is your original project (not copied from elsewhere). I focus on improving structure, clarity, and voice rather than generating text for you.
What are the timeframes for each type of edit?
The length of time taken depends on the level of service needed and length of the project. Indicated times on the gig purchases information are for first revision feedback. Example times would be: 3000 word Basic Package = 1-2days 20-50,000 word Standard = 5-6 days 80,000 word Premium = 7-10 days
