Migration from Drupal 9.5.8 to 11 Version

Jun 2025 - Sep 20253 mos

Executive Summary Successfully completed a monumental leap from Drupal 7 (end-of-life) to Drupal 11, involving a full platform rebuild, custom module refactoring, secure data migration, and significant SEO performance enhancements. This upgrade future-proofs the digital ecosystem, delivering improved site speed, editorial usability, and enterprise-grade security. 1. Data Migration Strategy (D7 → D11) Given Drupal 7’s deprecated database schema and Drupal 11’s object-oriented architecture, a custom migration path was executed rather than a direct update. Migration Workflow: Assessment & Cleanup: Audited D7 content types, fields, and taxonomy; removed orphaned data, outdated nodes, and redundant revision logs to reduce migration payload. Migration Tools Used: Drupal Migrate API, Migrate Drupal, Migrate Plus, and Migrate Tools. Custom migration plugins were developed for CCK fields, image attachments, and custom tables. Content Migration: Migrated 15,000+ nodes, 8,000+ taxonomy terms, 2,500+ user accounts, and 50+ GB of managed files. Preserved all content relationships (entity references, paragraphs, menu links). Data Mapping & Transformation: Converted D7’s serialized field data to D11’s JSON-based field storage; migrated custom PHP filters to modern HTML/Rich Text editors; remapped D7’s node_revision logic to D11’s entity revision system. Validation & Rollback: Performed three test migrations with hash comparison for content integrity; used migration_rollback safely during QA before final production cutover. Key Outcome: Zero data loss, maintained node IDs for critical content (where feasible), and fully functional revision histories. The upgrade from Drupal 7 to 11 was not merely a version bump but a holistic digital transformation. By combining rigorous data migration, custom module modernization, and aggressive SEO optimization, the platform now operates with higher performance, security compliance, and search visibility.
