I will develop and tighten your story arcs and themes
Professional and experienced editor
Informazioni su questo servizio
When do you need a developmental edit?
Ideally, the best time is right after you've finished your first (or second) draft. It's when you have the raw material for your story all written out, but need help picking out the threads of plot, character, and theme and enhancing them to tell the story you want to.
Questions I'll ask (and help you answer):
- Are the highs high enough to feel appropriately momentous?
- Are the lows low enough to make the emotional payoffs feel earned?
- Do the characters get enough page time (or too much)?
- Do the events of the story flow together naturally, or feel forced for convenience?
- How well do the characters and the plot feed the story's themes?
- What are the themes of the story? (And which ones do you want to enhance?)
- What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the plot, themes, and characters?
- What are some ways to fix the story's main problems in the next draft?
Developmental editing can be very subjective.

FAQ
Can I contact you directly with questions before placing an order?
I'd really prefer that, actually! Not every author and editor are a perfect fit. Let's have a conversation about where you are in your publishing journey and what you want out of editing, first, then decide if I'm the right editor for you AND your book.
What's your background?
I'm an American, currently living and working in Japan.
What's your editing experience?
6+ years freelance editing (fiction & nonfiction, native English & Japanese-to-English translations), 10+ years teaching ESL (English as Second Language) where I correct and grade essays, poetry, fiction, book reports, etc.
What's your favorite fantasy series?
Tamora Pierce's "Protector of the Small" series, which is about a young girl who is the first in generations to be allowed to train as a knight. Pierce's books were my first (and possibly best) education in grounded, consistent fantasy worldbuilding that melts into the background.
What's your favorite sci-fi series?
Animorphs, hands down. The storytelling is in first person and uses a language level appropriate for middle-grade readers, but unapologetic about depicting colonization, racism, war, and PTSD. The series was my first lesson in how vital it is to make sure your ending fits the tone of your story.
Is fanfiction real writing?
Yes, absolutely. I'd argue that writing fanfiction is one of the best ways to get practice with storytelling (narrative pacing, character and plot arcs, characterization) without all the backend stress of worldbuilding. Plus, some AUs can get very close to being practically fully original.
