What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing is a big-picture, structural pass, usually done early in revision, before line or copyediting. It focuses on the "bones" of the work rather than sentence-level polish.
How should I prepare my manuscript for developmental edits?
Make sure your full draft is finished first. Don't line-edit yet (since things might move around). Send a clean draft in a .docx (doesn't have to be perfect!), plus any specific questions you want me to address.
What exactly will you look for in a developmental edit?
I assess structure, pacing, plot/logic, character development, voice, and audience fit. You'll get a detailed editorial letter (depending on the gig purchased), plus in-manuscript comments highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and concrete suggestions for revision.
Can I ask follow-up questions after I receive the edit?
Yes! I love questions! If you are ever unsure about a comment/suggestion I've made and how it will impact your work on a larger scale, I am happy to message you at any time while you're working on your revisions.
Will my manuscript be kept confidential?
